Timeline - The Beginning
Steve Jobs introduced the first iPhone on stage during the annual Worldwide Developers Conference. The original iPhone featured a 3.5” display with multitouch support that no one had ever seen on a smartphone before. It also had a software keyboard instead of a plastic, physical keyboard.
After a successful launch of the iPhone, Apple started to work on the second generation. The new iPhone 3G had new hardware features, such as GPS and 3G data. The App store was also introduced, this platform allowed third-party applications to be installed into the device.
The third-generation iPhone called the iPhone 3GS, brought new features such as voice control and improved cellular connectivity. This iPhone was the fastest smartphone during its time.
The iPhone 4 had a new design with a slightly larger screen. It had new features never seen before in a smartphone; a high-resolution display, a dual-camera system, and also a new type of video communication called FaceTime. This is also one of the last devices Steve Jobs worked on before his death.
Many popular features were introduced with the iPhone 4S. Siri debuted and brought a smart voice assistant, iMessages was launched and iCloud was implemented. More storage space was available for media and apps.
A slight redesign happened to the iPhone. The screen size was increased, and mobile connectivity was improved. At this point, no other phone could surpass the iPhone, the race to success was underway.
For the first time, Apple launched two iPhone models: 5S and 5C. The iPhone 5S became the high-end model that offered a better battery life and Touch ID, while the iPhone 5C became the budget-friendly model. Apple also announced a major redesign of the iPhone's operating system.
